This is about the so called women empowerment movie I watched yesterday. I wish the film makers produce the story they have in mind rather than trying to put their movie into the genres they conveniently fit into. I have seen worse films than this. Films which had given me jaundice. I even enjoyed few isolated sequence in the movie. The reason for the post is the so called women empowerers (is that even a word) who go gaga over the movie. For no reason.
What is a well written movie? It is a cinematic experience which drives its point through developing interesting and believable characters and good writing. Sadly the movie I am talking about didn’t have any of these. There were breathtaking visuals yes, some isolated well thought out sequences. But more than that the film is more style than substance.
The lead characters is a frustrated director whose film is sleeping in the cans, thanks to a sadistic producer. He drinks his heart out everyday not minding about his wife and kid.
The second lead character is having an affair with a widow, who doesn’t want anything more than that. He gets married to a small town girl and declares in first night that he isn’t interested in her.
The third person is self proclaimed righteous person who cannot see women suffer. But he keeps mum when he is sober and shouts his lungs out when he is drunk.
All the characters are flawed. Sometimes we will relate to the flawed characters. But the jumps in the narrative makes sure that we route for no one. Any movie sets into motion when the characters starts reacting and take action to change the status quo. The “Goddesses” of the movie don’t really do that. They go with the flow and then complain that all their hardships are because of the men in their lives. Even when one woman character decides to do something about it, she abandons it half way and was perfectly fine with crawling to hell hole she just crawled out of. It made me go WTF!!
I accept that is the story the director wanted to tell. Fine! And then comes the penultimate dialogue of the movie mouthed by a male character “We are such a waste in the earth. We are not compassionate like the women. We will only destroy us” which was uncalled for. All the trouble in the story crept up because of bad decision after bad decision of people who were under influence of alcohol or so full of themselves. There is no need to paint a whole gender in that light. How is it different from the marriage jokes which goes round in whatsapp degrading the women? The movie could have ended without that dialogue. But no! The script writer wanted to score brownie points with a set women audience (found abundant in internet) that every trouble they have to go through in the lives are because of men. It doesn’t matter they don’t take action. It doesn’t matter, they use the brains that are given to her. We can take advantages of such things when the woman fights and accomplishes something. But when bad things happen it is only because of the men.
I feel sorry for the people who go gaga over the movie. If a movie, half baked that is, is required to make you respect the women in your life, I don’t know what the education and family taught you all these days.
The movie is perfect for people who are flawed themselves and looking to find some one else to put the blame for screwing up their lives. I don’t know if it is a self quip, but a character in the movie describes such attitude of film makers as massage for the audience. A massage with happy ending and later adds soapy massage with happy ending.
There are good things too. I may post it later as most of the brilliant scenes are placed in important moment in the movie, it would spoil the movie experience if I do that now. There is time. There are no big releases until Kabali next month. This movie will not only survive but become a cult classic.
